Here's a book that changed so much about me. It is written beautifully, in a language that is simple, thoughts that are insightful and a story that is so piercing that you simply can't stop reading! I thank my dear friend Seema for giving me such a profound book!
I am talking about, Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Her story is the first I have read about Africa, Nigeria in particular that has vivid details of life there, of two families who are different but related and of a girl who goes through so much at a tender age and discovers life is all about learning from experiences and it is as much about living it as about observing it.
What was also really humbling was how little I knew about life in Nigeria. What they ate, what they wore, how their houses are and to begin with it was hard for me to imagine the characters were Nigerians. We are so bombarded by the "white-brown" world, that all the imagination is also tuned that way.
To add to this, it is the first novel by Ms. Adichie! Deeply poignant with a ray of hope that we all like to hang on to! Can't wait to read her other works..
